PARAPHRASING

Paraphrasing means to use another words to explain something that someone has already said, using synonyms to create another version of what is been said.

EXERCISE I

Paraphrase each sentence. There may be more than one way to rewrite each one.

1. Despite their massive size, elephants are known for being agile.

- Elephants are considered to be smart animals in spite of their body volume.

2. Because elephants consume up to 500 pounds of food a day, they are able to strip a forest bare in no time.

- Elephants can strip a forest in a short period of time because they consume until 500 pounds of food per day.

3. Over the centuries, lions have been used in art to represent power and magnificence.

- The image of lions is been used to represent power and magnificence for centuries.

4. Lions are social animals with one dominant male in each pride.

- Lions are known for being animals with a dominant part and pride.

5. George Washington Carver was a dedicated teacher, in addition, he was known as a talented artist, musician, and researcher who made valuable contributions to his people and his country.

- George Washington Carver made valuable contributions to his people and country throuhg his dedicated life of teaching and researchings.

6. Archibald McLeish, known for his poetry, was appointed head of the Library of Congress by President Roosevelt in 1939.

EXERCISE II

Read each paragraph and state the main idea in your own words.

Main Idea #1

Despite from the fact that we have a lot of water in the earth, there are some problems that make many people be without sufficient water.

Main Idea #2

We need to find new oil supplies to replace those already used up; people keep hunting and making huge efforts but the searching never ends.

Main Idea #3

There is a religious group called the Society of Friends that fight freedom for slaves in the Civil War, and nowadays they fight for hunger and disease based on the principals of pacifism and simple living.

    - Check the meaning in paraphrasis Nº 4, that is not the right one.

    - Review the spelling of "throuhg". Does researching take the plural form in this case?
